Directions for using Acrobat Reader 4.0 to view and print chapters from the book: "The Uplifted Face"

PDF files can be viewed online using your browser; NOTE for AOL users...

  • Download and install the free Acrobat Reader 4.0, if it is not already on your system. Installation should place a "PDFViewer" plugin in the plugins folder of your browser. This allows PDF files to be loaded for display in your browser window for online viewing, and you can also print the file from there, to any printer, using either a MAC or PC.
  • If you cannot get a pdf file to display with your browser for online viewing, Acrobat Reader 4.0 allows you to also choose to DOWNLOAD the pdf file, and print it out from your hard drive.
  • If the PDFViewer is NOT in your plugins folder, try following the instructions for "configuring your browser" with Acrobat Reader - Troubleshooting, or see if our "short version" suggestions below will work on your system...

In Explorer 4.5:

  1. Be sure the "PDFViewer" plugin is located in the Explorer plugins folder; if not, it comes with Acrobat Reader and should be in the original Acrobat folder...drag a copy of it to your plugins folder.
  2. With Explorer open, go to top menu bar, EDIT>Preferences>Receiving Files>File Helpers. In the new section that appears in the dialog box, click once where you see all the application names, to activate the scroll bar. Scroll down to "Portable Document Format" and click on it once to select it. Click the "change" button. At bottom of dialog box, you'll see a bar for "handling" options...click and drag to "view with plugin". In same dialog box, there is also a "plugin name"...if "PDFViewer" is NOT listed, use the "browse" button to locate it in your Explorer plugins folder and select it so it becomes the "helper application".
  3. OK>...Done!

In Navigator 4.7:

  1. Be sure the "PDFViewer" plugin is located in the Netscape plugins folder; if not, it comes with Acrobat Reader and should be in the original Acrobat folder...drag a copy of it to your plugins folder.
  2. With Navigator open, go to top menu bar, EDIT>Preferences>Navigator>Applications. In the new section that appears in the dialog box, click once where you see all the application names, to activate the scroll bar. Scroll down to "Portable Document Format" and click on it once to select it. Click the "edit" button. If "PDFViewer" is NOT listed, use the "browse" button to locate it in your Navigator plugins folder and select it so it becomes the "helper application".
  3. OK>...Done!

Doing this should ensure that the pdf file opens up in your browser window, where it can be viewed at several window sizes, and printed out.

AOL USERS PLEASE NOTE: You may have problems viewing the chapters on line if you subscribe to AOL. Some PC users with AOL can view the files online, but there may be a problem if you are using a MAC. There appears to be no easy way currently for you to configure the MAC AOL browser versions to display the pdf file online, so we recommend you download and print out the pdf file.
